It’s time for the 2015 Bicycle Tucson Summer Photo Contest. Will this year’s winner be you?

Here’s how it will work. You may submit two photos by emailing them with a caption to bicycletucson@gmail.com. We’ll post the photos in a gallery and open up voting on August 17.

In addition to reader’s favorites we will ask a professional photographer to weigh in on his or her favorite photos.

Drum roll please. The 2014 Bicycle Tucson winners are in.

Bicycle Tucson readers voted for their favorite and photojournalist Kim Newton selected his own favorite photos and added a brief critique.

Bicycle Tucson voters selected Chris Carls’ photo as their favorite:

The winning photo by Chris Carls.

Newton also selected Carl’s photo as his favorite. His second favorite photo was also Carls’ photo of a child on a tricycle. Here’s what he had to say about them:

First Place: Picture #43 Not sure if this image was shot in this light or the light added, but it is a strong composition and from and interesting perspective. In the end the colored lights make the image interesting and gives it an emotional mood.

Second Place: Picture #42 – The backlit photograph of the boy on the tricycle even though a cliché is well executed by using the late afternoon light and a low angle perspective to create a strong and interesting composition. All the elements, mailbox and shadows help to make this image work visually.

Since Carls’ photo was also the voters’ favorite we’ll award the other prize winning photo to Newton’s third place winner.

Here’s what he had to say about Damion Alexander’s photo of El Grupo riders.

Third Place: Picture #1 – The four members of the El Grupo summer bike camp near Durango. This picture has a strong sense of emotion that goes directly to friendship,  camaraderie and accomplishment. It encompasses nice light and strong sense of place.

Here’s are Newton’s honorable mentions:

Honorable Mention: Picture #46 – Crested Butte Tucson style. Great light, sense of place and clean composition. This image tells a nice story about cycling in the mountains.

Honorable Mention: Picture #22 – This image is shot in great light, especially scene reflecting along the mountain in the background. It would have been a great picture if the photographer had just waited a few more seconds for the cyclist to move a bit more into the frame away from the Saguaro, making for a stronger and more balanced composition.
