Haven’t tried it yet (I try to avoid campus for at least the first two weeks of classes!), but I’m looking forward to giving it run next time I ride through! It looks to me like maybe the striping isn’t finished?? I’ve noticed other times where it seems like the dashed line striper is behind schedule… Not sure if it’s a different machine and the crews just don’t coordinate, but I am betting/hoping there will be some better guidance than that!
Last weekend I saw a confused car driver heading up wrong way on the street, trying to squeeze in the bike lane scrubbing his tires on the curb.
It breaks with the consistency of riding with traffic. I’ve always been uneasy with things like that because it seems the human brain only needs one instance to justify disregarding the established norm.
Mike, Mtngoat and others – most of the bike markings are not in yet and when they are I think it will really help with the confusion. I’ve seen these operate in several cities and they work fine once people get over the initial break-in period. I’m hoping this will be a good alternative to 2nd Street!
I like it. I was going East on that street a year ago and a U of A cop stopped me and scolded me. He told me to turn around and go back to Park. I like that they painted a double yellow stripe. That’s pretty clear to drivers that they can’t drive the wrong way in the bike lane. As for cars turning East from Park, I suppose a single large bollard right on the double yellow line right at Park Av. would nip that in the bud.
