The City of Tucson is installing signs instructing both motorists and bicyclists about how they should interact with bicycle boxes along the streetcar route.
Ann Chanecka, the city’s bicycle and pedestrian program manager said there are five bike boxes along the streetcar route that will get the signs.
The signs tell drivers to stop behind the box and cyclists to stop in the box in front of cars.
“When putting in new innovative treatments it is a challenge to make sure people know what they are,” she said. “It’s a low cost way to educate bicyclists and motorists.”
Chanecka said the green bike boxes are placed at intersections where there is an advantage for the cyclist to be out in front of the traffic in order to be seen or to make turns.
Not all of the signs has been installed yet, but should be done soon she said.
