After posting the blog about nearly being hit the other day, I received a lot of responses from friends about their recent near misses.
I was talking to one friend and he said ti was really hard to have a civil conversation with a driver after they nearly hit you, which I totally understand. It took me several minutes to be able to have a civil conversation with the driver that turned into me.
I mentioned perhaps having cards printed that you could just hand to a driver outlining why it is important that they pay attention and allow the cyclist to remain calm.
My friend said he saw a magnet in San Francisco that did exactly that. He even wrote down what it said:
“Yellow card”
“This magnet was tossed onto your car by a cyclist who felt that you might have been driving in a way that could have endangered their life…
They choose to toss this magnet because it can neither damage your automobile, nor affix to rubber or glass and will therefore not effect your driving…
With thoughtful contemplation and reverence for humanity, we can adjust our behavior to allow for all people to live life…
This is a yellow card lets not let things get to RED”
I'm not sure about the wording, but what do you think about the concept? What would you want a card to say?

Anybody have a notion that the whole
idea behind the RTA was just to get the
streetcar?
The recent death should be notice to
cyclists what we are in for.
The Copenhagen video is great and put
me in mind of what we could have with
ten to twenty percent of the $128 million
estimated cost of streetcar infrastructure.
But, hey, it's gonna serve…….well, we don't
know how many because there aren't any
streetcar riders currently.
We know about how many cyclists there are
because we counted them and we get……
to fall down.
From the Copenhagen video we see:
They like separated bikeways similar
to Mountain Ave. or even more
protected.
Prioritized bicycle signaling-
I can hardly imagine that. You
would almost not have to pay
attention to cars.
And lots of mostly unhelmeted
riders who enjoy the true safety
of riding in numbers too large
to ignore….probably attracted
to cycling because of the great
infrastructure.
It's a different culture and they've
had decades to develop.
I wonder if they started with a
streetcar?
It's standard that Arizona Daily Star reporters and editors in their latest “RTA crisis may wipe out 25% of projects” makes no mention of bikes.
Here it is:

Great journalism, Kelley an O'dell!
And no mention of shortening
the streetcar line from 4 miles
to 3 miles.
I've thought about that printing up cards before, though I like the magnet idea. If I ever do go to the trouble I would also put a list of some of the AZ revised statutes as they apply to cyclist/driver interactions. Taking the lane, passing distance, yielding when making a right hand turn, etc.
