A 28-year-old man was struck and killed crossing Speedway on Saturday afternoon.
According to a Tucson Police Department press release, Matthew Bono was walking south across Speedway at Ritchey Boulevard when he was struck by Edward George, 74, at 2:59 p.m. Bono was in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.
Witnesses indicated that George did not stop after striking Bono, but returned to the scene after drivers followed him and caught his attention.
Police detectives suspected George was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and charged him with one count of second degree murder.
Bono’s death marks the 15th pedestrian killed in Tucson this year, which is a 150 percent increase over the six pedestrians killed last year.

At the entrance to foreign embassies, they have pneumatically controlled bollards that pop out of the ground to keep cars from coming in. Maybe some crosswalks should have bollards like that. Anyway, I don’t even start to walk across a street until it’s clear. It may take 5 minutes, but there is always a hole in traffic within that time. My life is worth a few minutes.
