Pima Association of Governments is looking for volunteers for the 2012 regional bike count in October.

This year marks the fifth bicycle count conducted in the region to gauge the level of ridership.

According to PAG, the two main reasons for the count are:

• Document the number of people currently bicycling and walkin; and monitor how those numbers are changing over time

• Determine and prioritize appropriate locations for future bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements

The dates and times for the counts are:

Count days

Tuesday, Oct. 16

Wednesday, Oct. 17

Thursday, Oct. 18

Tuesday, Oct. 23

Wednesday, Oct. 24

Thursday, Oct. 25

*Weekend counts also available

Count times

Morning:

7–9 a.m.

Evening:

4-6 p.m.

There are four steps involved in volunteering for the count.

Step 1: Attend a training session if you haven’t volunteered to count before.

If this is your first time participating, you MUST attend ONE of our short training sessions, which last about 45 minutes. You do not have to attend both training sessions. Training sessions are scheduled for:

Thursday, October 11, 6 p.m. Himmel Park Library, 1035 N. Treat Ave., Tucson, AZ 85716

Saturday, October 13, 9 a.m. City of Tucson Ward 6 Council Office, 3202 E. 1st St., Tucson, AZ 85716

Step 2: Pick a location to count

Sign up for volunteer times and locations using PAG’s interactive web map, which can be accessed from the 2012 count web page at: http://gismaps.pagnet.org/BikeCountSignUp2012/

Step 3: Count

Perform a bicycle and pedestrian count at a particular location (you select an available location and sign up online after the training) between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The count can be done on any of the six days noted below. Morning and afternoon counts do NOT have to be on the same day, so you can do your morning count on one day and your afternoon count on another. However, we do encourage you to do both your a.m. and p.m. counts during the same week. Remember, we only need ONE a.m. count and ONE p.m. count for each location.

Step 4: Return the counts

Mail us your count. We’ll provide you with a pre-addressed, pre-stamped envelope at the training.

The count will take place on the following dates:

Tuesday – Thursday, Oct. 16 – 18, 2012

Tuesday – Thursday, Oct. 23 – 25, 2012

Weekend Counts: Oct. 13 – Oct. 29, 2012
